German AI company Aleph Alpha launched Kolibri, a new LLM released as open weights under Apache 2.0, timed to German National Day after months of pre- and post-training.
Key positioning:
- Sovereign by design: trained end-to-end from scratch in Germany with full supply-chain integrity, free deployment, IP safety, and "no imported bias"
- Bilingual specialization: optimized on curated in-house German-language data, natively covering German and English
- Compliance: aligned with EU AI Act and related codes, targeting mission-critical public sector and regulated industry workloads
- Capabilities: multi-step reasoning, structured extraction, RAG, and reliable tool calling for assistants and agentic workflows
- Efficiency claim: comparable performance to larger models while generating more text output per GPU, on the efficiency Pareto frontier
Another concrete landing for Europe's "sovereign AI" playbook.
