Sam Altman says his Dot agent reads his Slack and tracks his shifting priorities, from growth to safety
every · x · 2026-10-03
In the debut episode of The Every Podcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman detailed how his always-on agent Dot (nicknamed Dotty) runs his day:
- A dashboard that follows his priorities: Dot reads his Slack messages and continuously updates a business summary just for him. He says six months ago it emphasized revenue and growth; his focus has since shifted toward safety, alignment, and security.
- Getting his mornings back: Early mornings used to be his peak-creativity deep-work window until running OpenAI meant daily firefighting. Dot now triages issues and alerts him only when something is urgent.
The interview took place at OpenAI's DevDay, where the company shipped 22 products and features—more than twice last year's count. Altman also discussed why he only prompts on Ultrafast, how he builds new features, and his belief that AI will spark a new Renaissance.
