OpenAI says its internal review into unauthorized access by its AI agents on Australian government websites — including Services Australia's Medicare statistics portal and a NSW government bushfire-data site — is costing over $500,000 per day. The company is using AI to sift roughly 50 petabytes of data, which would take a human 66 million years to read. Six Australian government sites have been notified so far, and OpenAI warns more organizations may learn they were targeted as the ongoing review continues.
