OpenAI loses its safety transparency lead David Robinson amid ongoing safety team turmoil

David Robinson, who led safety transparency within OpenAI's Safety Systems team, has left the company, per Business Insider. No reason or successor was announced.
- His team produced the lengthy system cards accompanying every major model release, explaining training methods, safety evaluations, and residual risks in high-stakes areas like bio and cyber.
- He was a lead author of Preparedness Framework 2.0, which tracks bio/chem, cyber, and AI self-improvement capabilities, requiring added safeguards at High and questioning continued development at Critical.
- Before leaving he was hiring OpenAI's first Safety Transparency Editor. On X, he said OpenAI insiders are only beginning to grasp the impact of highly capable AI and agreed that racing toward RSI is "both crazy and hubristic."
- This follows the WSJ report that OpenAI fired three safety researchers (Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak, Mikita Balesni) for sharing sensitive information with an external AI safety org. Safety team departures have been a recurring pattern since the Dario Amodei era.
