Seven-year OpenAI veteran departs, recalling GPT-2 era through Codex and ChatGPT
csvoss · x · 2026-10-03
A longtime OpenAI employee who joined in 2019, back when GPT-2 was the company's only known model, has announced her departure. She recounts how she immediately saw GPT-2's scaling potential — envisioning automated CAD, code and proof writing, protein design, and genome analysis.
Over seven years she took part in landmark moments: the GPT-3 API launch, the discovery of multimodal neurons in CLIP, the DALL·E 1 paper and DALL·E 2 product, the original 2021 Codex Challenge, presenting GPT-4 to Bill Gates in 2022, its 2023 release evals, and the ChatGPT launch through to Codex today.
Thanking Greg Brockman and Sam Altman, she says she is stepping back to focus on family, raising her one-year-old son and welcoming a daughter this February.
