Cognition went from $1M to $1B ARR in 24 months, with its own agent writing 90% of its code

Cognition, maker of Devin, crossed $1B in annualized revenue on Sept 25 — up from $1M just 24 months earlier. Its March 2024 launch demo was widely debunked when the company had no customers and no revenue. Since then it raised three rounds in 12 months (latest at a $48B valuation), acquired Windsurf — a company 5x its size — in a 72-hour weekend deal after Google hired Windsurf's founders, and now its own agent writes 90% of its code, up from 13% in five months. Devin works as an autonomous AI engineer that takes tickets in Slack/Jira, codes, tests, and opens PRs. Early pilots failed until a boring task gave them PMF; they cut pricing from $500 to $20 and used Forward Deployed Engineers to close Goldman Sachs and the US Navy, compressing an 18-month enterprise sales cycle.
