Cryptographer Matthew Green: consciousness is likely just the output of a computational process
matthew_d_green · x · 2026-10-03
Well-known cryptography scholar Matthew Green sparked a discussion on AI consciousness. He argues such debates usually consist of assertions or facile points about current models' limited memory — yet we don't deny consciousness to amnesiacs, so memory size isn't the criterion. He says we may never get an honest discussion because it's too scary to accept that what we call consciousness is just the output of a computational process, but scientifically, that's where the evidence points.
