Rust No Longer the Default for Agents: Slow Compiles, AI Handles Memory Now
charliermarsh · x · 2026-10-03
Developer zackoverflow argues that Rust is no longer the de facto best language for agents, for two reasons:
- Compile times are too long: he's always bottlenecked by time, not intelligence — agents can't wait on long builds
- Manual memory management is no longer a hurdle: agents have gotten really good at handling it themselves
Ruff/uv author charlie marsh chimed in asking what the new meta is. The thread points to iteration-speed-first languages (Python/TypeScript) resurging in the agent era: when the code is written by agents, the criteria for choosing a language are being rewritten.
