ChatGPT Mistook a Spreadsheet Fix for Fraud, Triggering User's First AI Ethics Debate
wyther · reddit · 2026-10-03
A Reddit user who prices survey jobs says ChatGPT refused to help split an already-agreed fixed price into a 10% profit line plus estimated crew and office hours — same rates, same total — accusing him of hiding profit and fabricating hours. Despite explaining these were buffer estimates for fixed-fee contracts, the model kept lecturing him about being misleading until it finally understood, by which point he'd fixed the spreadsheet himself. He suspects a safety-alignment change in the new version and asks if others have hit the model turning basic spreadsheet help into an ethics debate.
