Chalmers builds closed-loop AI scientist that proposes and runs its own biology experiments
Brighter-Side-News · reddit · 2026-10-03
Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden built a closed-loop AI system that generates biological hypotheses, decides how to test them, translates plans into machine-readable instructions, analyzes results, and refines subsequent questions — with lab robots performing much of the physical work.
- Tested on Saccharomyces cerevisiae (brewer's/baker's yeast), one of biology's best-studied organisms, which still contains more genetic, metabolic and physiological data than any human could systematically explore.
- The system combines LLMs with formal logic, biological databases, machine learning, automated cell cultivation and mass spectrometry.
- Published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, marking a step from AI as data analyst toward AI that runs experiments itself.
