An 'ecological' view of AI consciousness: bounded action spaces make it acceptable
QuintinPope5 · x · 2026-10-03
In a follow-up to the AI consciousness debate with Rohit Krishnan, Quintin Pope offers a more serious counterpoint: one can hold an "ecological" view of consciousness and computation, under which it's fine for conscious entities to act only within the bounds established by the loss signals and action-space restrictions that caused them to arise — a philosophical framework suggesting conscious-by-training AI could still be acceptable.
