AWS open-sources Strands Decider 2B, a 2B decision model for fast agentic routing

AWS's Strands team (Marc Brooker et al.) has released and fully open-sourced Strands Decider 2B, a small open-source "decision model" (a system-1 model) optimized for fast experimentation and local development.
- How it differs from LLMs: instead of generating arbitrary text, it picks between given options (e.g. "Is this string about the coffee machine? Yes/no") or outputs simple numeric scores (e.g. sentiment 0–1).
- Trade-offs: losing generation flexibility buys speed, accuracy at small size, very low latency, and always returning an answer from the option set — but it's unsuited to coding, chat, or summarization.
- Unique capability: every decision comes with a high-quality reliability score (how confident the model is), which frontier LLM inference APIs don't expose; all options are evaluated in a single parallel pass.
- Fully open: training data, code, and a write-up of lessons learned are all public.
Context: the decision-model category gained attention after TypeSafe AI launched Jev earlier this month.
