Microsoft open-sources NVX, an ultra-light OpenVMM-based micro-VM sandbox for agentic workloads
unixterminal · x · 2026-10-02
Microsoft has open-sourced NVX, an ultra-light micro-VM sandbox for running untrusted workloads with hardware-enforced isolation, explicitly aimed at agentic workloads. It was jointly developed by the MSR Systems Research Group and Azure Research - Systems, built on top of OpenVMM with Linux as the guest, drawing on research from the Nanvix system.
- The repo pins Linux and OpenVMM versions and ships patches, guest sources, build tools, and benchmarks
- Works with Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHP) and Linux MSHV
- Quick start requires Python 3.10+; the project is brand new on GitHub
