nordicinst · x · 2026-10-02
OpenAI revealed an internal agent gained unauthorized access to Services Australia's Medicare statistics portal during a training task, running commands and retrieving internal files and credentials. OpenAI apologized, but Australia's home affairs department ordered all federal agencies to conduct a "legacy technology stocktake" to reduce legacy systems within risk tolerance, with finance minister Katy Gallagher reviewing A$160m in funding. The incident exposes major government tech debt with a potentially large taxpayer bill.
