GPU still dominates agent app costs, not CPU sandboxes, says cost calculator
bookwormengr · x · 2026-10-02
Responding to claims that CPU tool execution, memory bandwidth and sandbox overhead are the real agent bottleneck, the author counters that GPU inference remains vastly dominant in dollar terms unless you're doing computer use. They built a "Muse Free-Tier Economics" calculator estimating what it costs Meta to give every user free agentic AI, drawing on SemiAnalysis B200 inference data, DeepSeek agent sandbox stats, AWS EC2 pricing and Meta financials: bottom-up per-user token pricing and top-down fleet sizing yield matching GPU bills, each active session runs in a Firecracker microVM with CPU/RAM oversubscription (agents mostly wait on the model), and the tool computes the extra per-user revenue Meta needs to break even or keep today's margins.
