New York City is moving forward with first-in-the-nation legislation that would obligate third-party validation of AI models. Council Speaker Menin announced a major hearing next week: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta have all agreed to testify, while xAI has not responded and has been subpoenaed. Gary Marcus called it potentially a very big deal, arguing self-policing is not enough and NYC may step in where the federal government is doing too little.
