Hands-on with OpenAI Dots: proactive AI butler shows promise, but latency and UX fall short
cedric_chee · x · 2026-10-02
A hands-on review of OpenAI's Dots finds it's not about beating Codex but a new way of working with AI: proactive by default. Dots learns what matters to you, works from connected apps, synthesizes info, and sometimes delivers finished work before you ask. The appeal is memory plus Astra-level orchestration in a single AI butler without DIY setup—compelling especially for non-technical users, "Claw version 42.0." But it's undercooked: push notifications fail, latency is high, and it fails the author's "mum test" on UX, needing polish before it becomes a daily driver.
