UK design industry leaders say designers shouldn't fear AI replacement
nordicinst · x · 2026-10-02
The Guardian reports that UK industry leaders believe professional designers should not feel "threatened" by generative AI, despite fears over job losses.
- Mat Hunter, CEO of the Design Council, says designers are using AI to "add value" — treating it as "the intern in the office" rather than a replacement — and that the UK needs more professional designers, so overall employment should keep growing.
- Deborah Dawton, CEO of the Design Business Association, argues skill, experience, empathy and deep sector understanding protect great designers from AI.
- Industry bodies note demand for design skills across design, film production and manufacturing remains robust, with AI so far doing little to reduce it.
