Nvidia acquires Hugging Face in $13B deal, doubling down on open-source AI

Nvidia has confirmed it will acquire Hugging Face—'the GitHub of AI'—in a deal valued at $13 billion, per The Daily Upside citing the Financial Times. CEO Jensen Huang framed it as an open-source bet: 'Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.'
The road here twisted: in January, Hugging Face reportedly rejected a $500M Nvidia investment at a $7B valuation—more than it had raised in a decade—saying it didn't want a single 'dominant' investor. By this summer, the tables turned and Hugging Face approached Nvidia, CEO Clément Delangue confirmed on CNBC. Context: open models helped fend off proprietary rivals like OpenAI, and the deal gives Nvidia the biggest collection of open-source AI roadmaps.
