Fields medalist Jacob Tsimerman founds Mathematical AI Safety Institute, joins OpenAI

Fields medalist Jacob Tsimerman is leaving pure math to work on AI safety, joining OpenAI's safety department this month. He also announced MAISI, an independent Mathematical AI Safety Institute in the Bay Area, starting its first research semester in January 2027 and hiring 10-30 mathematicians initially.
