Arena Physica explains why FEM solvers never compute E-fields at mesh nodes
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-02
While collecting training data for Heaviside, its foundation model for electromagnetics, Arena Physica hit a basic question: how do you extract EM field values from an FEM solver's solution? Coming from ML backgrounds, the team assumed node values could be exported and interpolated as in thermal/structural FEM — but the solver offers no bulk export. The surprise: EM solvers never solve for the E-field at mesh points at all; they use Nédélec edge elements with edge-based degrees of freedom. Christopher Bryant wrote an interactive explainer covering why standard electromagnetic simulation needs edge-based representation.
