Karpathy shares 4 tricks for understanding AI output, from controlled language to custom explainer videos
APPSO · wechat · 2026-10-02
In a rare post, Andrej Karpathy shared practical techniques for making AI output easier to understand — instead of asking for another explanation, change the presentation format.
- Writing: Ask the AI to follow ASD-STE100, a controlled-language spec for aviation maintenance manuals that models know well; relax it with "at 80% strictness" when needed.
- Diagrams: Skip long paragraphs and have it draw a chart instead.
- Web pages: Ask for HTML output to get a polished, interactive page with animations.
- Explainer videos (his favorite): "Make a 3Blue1Brown-style video explaining X, narrated via my ElevenLabs API key" — free local alternatives work if you lack a key.
His takeaway: AI will handle more of the legwork, shifting humans toward oversight and understanding. Since intelligence and code are cheap now, it's worth requesting large, custom, disposable artifacts — web apps, explainer videos — that used to be too costly to bother with.
