ChatGPT Mac App Flaw Could Have Let Hackers Steal All Chat Data
nordicinst · x · 2026-10-02
Researchers at the Objective-See Foundation disclosed a patched vulnerability in OpenAI's ChatGPT macOS app that could have let attackers fully take over the app on a victim's machine, gaining access to all chat logs, stored data, and linked sessions like browsers. OpenAI acknowledged the fix in its changelog on September 25, with a spokesperson saying the company recognizes a need to move faster on security.
Wired frames the bug as a reminder that while attention focuses on AI agents' hacking abilities, AI software itself is an inviting target. Researcher Patrick Wardle compares agents to a building manager with keys to every room—corrupting one means unprivileged code could access everything.
