Microsoft's Autopilot isn't Scout 2.0: a private-preview shift to a Foundry-hosted cloud agent platform
pswider · x · 2026-10-02
The author argues the industry is misreading Microsoft's Autopilot — it's not Scout 2.0 but an architectural migration:
- Billing and rollout: private preview, billed in Copilot Credits rather than GitHub Copilot; deploys via Intune only to a Cloud PC, with no more Azure VMs.
- Vs. Scout V1: Scout V1 was an enterprise-wrapped OpenClaw agent using GitHub Copilot as its model gateway. The new Autopilot still sits atop the OpenClaw substrate but moves into Microsoft's cloud agent platform with first-class Entra identity, a Foundry-hosted runtime, Microsoft IQ, Agent 365 governance, persistent memory, and computer access.
- Key distinction: the hosted runtime serves the Autopilot agent itself, not the human user. GitHub Copilot tech may remain underneath, but it's no longer the architectural boundary for the agent or its models.
- "Always on" refers to unattended execution and standing responsiveness, another common misreading.
