Toshiba to invest ¥60B to double AI data center HDD capacity by fiscal 2027

Nikkei reports Toshiba will invest about ¥60 billion to expand its Philippines plant and double production capacity for AI data center HDDs in fiscal 2027. Tight semiconductor memory supply is pushing AI data centers toward large-capacity nearline HDDs, driving prices up. The HDD market is an oligopoly of WD, Seagate and Toshiba, with Toshiba holding just over 10% share by capacity and targeting 30% mid-term. The poster mocks the earlier consensus that HDD makers wouldn't expand capacity recklessly.
