Data on 2.7M founders: successful startup founders average 47 at founding, not 22
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-02
Data on 2.7 million US founders challenges the YC-style "ideal founder is 22" narrative:
- Founders whose companies exit via acquisition or IPO averaged 47 years old at founding
- In the fastest-growing 0.1% of startups, founders averaged 45
- A 50-year-old founder is roughly twice as likely to reach an exit as a 30-year-old
- Founders with 3+ years of relevant industry experience are also twice as likely to build a top-0.1% growth company
Takeaway: it's never too late to start, and prior industry experience may be a founder's strongest edge.
