Hugging Face LeRobot adds humanoid support: π0.5 policy drives 29-DoF Unitree G1
freelerobot · x · 2026-10-02
Hugging Face published a deep dive on bringing humanoids into LeRobot, and Asimov's humanoid is coming to the ecosystem soon.
Key technical points:
- Bipedal robots need continuous balance, and VLA inference is too slow to control those dynamics directly, so a fast controller sits between the learned policy and the robot
- A π0.5 policy predicts SONIC latent motion tokens from language prompts, robot state, and camera observations
- A fast controller running on the Unitree G1 decodes tokens into stable 29-DoF whole-body motion
- The workflow builds on the OpenHLM paper, training OpenPI's π0.5 on whole-body teleoperation demonstrations
The post connects open-source hardware, teleoperation, datasets, and policy learning into a complete pipeline.
