OpenPOI API offers free key-less search across 3.37M Japan facilities with MCP support
studio_yebisu · x · 2026-10-02
A free, registration-free API called OpenPOI now lets developers search 3.37 million facilities across Japan by name, address, or radius from a point, sorted by distance—effectively a self-serve "nearby places" engine for any app.
Highlights:
- Commercial use allowed; results can be saved into your own database (with license and source attribution stored alongside)
- MCP support means AI agents can query it directly ("find cafes near this location")
- Data combines Overture Maps with Japanese municipalities' food-business permit open data
The sharpest angle is the combination of free storage and agent integration: you can enrich POIs with your own notes and tags to grow local guides or store maps. Attribution and per-dataset license compliance are required.
