OpenAI seeks $30B at ~$1.4T valuation as GPT-6.1 Astra fails internal safety review

OpenAI is in early talks to raise at least $30B at a $1.4T pre-money valuation — effectively bridge financing in lieu of an IPO, per Bloomberg. Its annualized revenue jumped over 70% in the past quarter to nearly $70B, with enterprise business doubling; at that run rate the valuation is about 20x P/S, meaning valuation growth hasn't outpaced revenue growth.
Meanwhile OpenAI hit the brakes on three fronts: GPT-6.1 Astra was withheld for failing internal safety evaluation (GPT-6 Astra was the first internal model to trigger OpenAI's "Critical" cybersecurity red line, capable of autonomously finding zero-days and chaining attacks); Altman said the company won't go public this year; and he endorsed Anthropic CEO Amodei's call to slow frontier development. Anthropic, by contrast, is pursuing an IPO above $2T with a prospectus openly warning of existential risk — two opposite answers to the same safety question.
