AMD to buy Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for ~$8.2B in stock; Li becomes chief scientist
ChrisUniverse · x · 2026-10-02
AMD is acquiring Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for roughly $8.2 billion in stock. World Labs builds spatial intelligence: models that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D worlds from text, image, and video, plus robotic learning and simulation.
- After closing, Li becomes AMD EVP and chief scientist, reporting directly to Lisa Su, with the team continuing model research; the deal is expected to close by end of 2026
- Analysis: AMD is fighting Nvidia to define the AI stack. Its last cycle was strictly LLMs; the next is reasoning, robotics, simulation, and physical AI. Selling only GPUs into Nvidia-defined software stacks would leave AMD as merely an alternative
- Open question: can a chip company keep a frontier model lab sharp once it sits inside AMD's roadmap process?
