Open-Source Coding Agent Z-Engine Delegates Micro-Decisions to a System 1 Model
arshadbarves · reddit · 2026-10-02
A developer building the open-source coding agent Z-Engine is experimenting with Laya, a System 1 decision model, to handle the many micro-decisions inside an agent: whether a tool call needs approval, which task route to take, whether to continue or escalate, which context is relevant, and whether a result satisfies a condition. Using a full LLM for each feels heavy, while Laya takes a state plus typed questions and returns choices, scores, or yes/no probabilities in a single pass without generating text — open weights, runs locally. Current setup: the main LLM handles reasoning while Laya handles faster decisions; the author is still figuring out how much of the system should use it. Z-Engine is open source.
