Pioneer Labs unveils sPL.001, the first engineered microbe designed to build with Martian soil

Non-profit Pioneer Labs announced sPL.001, billed as the first microbe engineered for Mars.
Context:
- Martian soil has the nutrients life needs but is laced with perchlorate toxins; existing plans (washing out toxins, shipping fertilizer, hydroponics) don't scale.
What sPL.001 does:
- Uses nutrients already present in Martian soil, water, and processed air to produce building polymers, enabling local manufacture of bulk materials like plastics on Mars;
- Pioneer Labs says it has demonstrated the microbe is safe to send to Mars and that Earth life can grow directly on nutrients already in Martian soil, removing a key risk on the terraforming path.
