Anthropic Details BootLoops: Prof. Schwartz Lets Claude Find 'Claude-Shaped' Science Problems
Dr_Singularity · x · 2026-10-02
Anthropic published a guest post by Harvard Prof. Matthew Schwartz on a new approach to AI-accelerated science: instead of fighting Claude, he let it find 'Claude-shaped' problems — ones suited to current LLM capabilities — and built BootLoops, a toolkit for exact calculations in quantitative science. Because similar calculations recur across disparate fields, Claude surfaced connections to ecology, population genetics and a dozen more areas; Schwartz then steered BootLoops toward questions those fields care about, producing 36 manuscripts with 19 coauthors across 18 fields in 3 months. The post also addresses the disconnect academics feel, as models mostly excel at well-scoped applications of existing techniques.
