MIT's InstructMesh fixes AI-generated 3D models for real fabrication
nordicinst · x · 2026-10-02
MIT CSAIL unveiled InstructMesh, a tool that lets users repair AI-generated 3D models and fabricate them exactly as they want.
Key points:
- Users can prompt a 3D design for everyday objects (e.g. a mug), highlight specific parts of the blueprint to refine, then 3D print the result
- Built by combining TRELLIS with GPT-4 to fix real-world usability gaps in AI-generated 3D designs
- Designed so both experts and 3D modeling newcomers can easily edit and fabricate generated designs
The research bridges the gap between AI generation and editable, manufacturable output, lowering the barrier to designing physical objects.
