Judge dismisses publishers' antitrust suit over Google AI Overviews, finding no formal bargain

A lawsuit by Penske Media (Rolling Stone, Billboard, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter) against Google's AI Overviews — alleging Google used publishers' content without compensating them via traffic or other means — has been dismissed by Judge Amit P. Mehta.
The court found plaintiffs failed to plead any actual agreement in which Google promised to "sell" any specific amount of traffic in exchange for "buying" their content, so the reciprocal-dealing antitrust claim fails.
The ruling makes it harder for publishers to use antitrust law to challenge AI-generated search summaries, leaving the content-licensing dispute unresolved.
