One prompt to build a custom MCP that renders rich movie UI inside Grok
Baconbrix · x · 2026-10-02
Developer Baconbrix shared a neat trick for extending Grok with a custom MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector in three steps:
- Use Grok's /build command with a single prompt to generate an MCP that searches and queries TMDB, supports generative UI (a carousel of movies with details when you search a list, custom formats for actor and movie data), and can generate HTML movie reports by mixing Grok API output with real TMDB data.
- Deploy the app and add it as a custom connector.
- Chat with Grok and ask it to use the connector to render rich movie/actor data.
The full prompt is public, making it directly reproducible — a good showcase of asking a model to build its own tools, with the caveat that the rich UI rendering depends on Grok's client capabilities.
