UChicago bans tech in humanities core classes, adds analog writing requirement for all
DynamicWebPaige · x · 2026-10-02
The University of Chicago is leading AI-era higher-ed reform: all students will take an analog (tech-free) writing class, humanities and social science core courses will prohibit in-class technology, and a computational thinking requirement may be added to the core.
Derek Thompson frames the fundamental tension: schools should both teach thinking and prepare students for the workforce, but AI pulls these goals apart — overusing AI in college makes you dumber, while avoiding it for four years leaves you disadvantaged for top entry-level jobs in software, finance, legal and marketing.
