arXiv is rolling out an updated rate-limiting policy for all submitters and categories as of October 1st, 2026, to fairly distribute moderator time and buy time to adapt moderation to AI-assisted writing.
- Submissions hit a record 40,363 in September — up from 20,569 in Sept 2024 and 9,869 in Sept 2016 — doubling in two years and generating nearly 9,000 support tickets
- arXiv says advanced AI tools are a key driver, blurring the practical limit on per-author output
- AI remains permitted as a disclosed research support tool, subject to arXiv's scholarly standards
