Musk: Tesla halved AI5 chip RAM to 72GB for Optimus scale, bandwidth matters more than capacity
elonmusk · x · 2026-10-02
Elon Musk says Tesla cut RAM in half for its AI5 chip (now 72GB LP5) and to one-third for AI6 (144GB LP6) — the only way to secure enough volume for Optimus production while greatly reducing cost.
With prior estimates at 200GB per humanoid robot and Musk predicting 10 billion robots eventually, that would demand 2 trillion GB of RAM against 45 billion GB of global annual DRAM output.
He argues the cut will have negligible impact on Optimus performance, since memory bandwidth — held constant here — is a bigger limiting factor than total memory capacity.
