AI researcher Seth Lazar argues national sovereignty will depend on access to the most capable AI, and countries without their own route to superintelligence are choosing to be vassal states. Afinetheorem pushes back: large sovereign-frontier-AI programs are fine, but billions in subsidies to "whoever lines up at the government trough" with a mediocre model deserve mockery. Frontier compute will partly rely on foreign inputs anyway — guarantee it like pharma or military components.
