Google: Starship must launch 1,600 times before space data centers work
TechCrunch AI · rss · 2026-10-02
Google has launched its first advanced chip into orbit to pave the way for space data centers.
The company estimates SpaceX's Starship would need about 1,600 launches before space data centers become commercially viable. The project targets space-based solar power and cooling to bypass terrestrial energy constraints, but launch cost and cadence remain the key bottleneck — a gap highlighted by that 1,600-launch figure.
