MIT study of 2.7M founders: average successful founder is 47, not 22
dansitu · x · 2026-10-02
Counter to the YC dropout-founder narrative, a widely shared post summarizes an MIT study of 2.7 million US founders:
- Founders of companies that exited via acquisition or IPO averaged 47 at founding
- Founders of the fastest-growing 0.1% of startups averaged 45
- A 50-year-old founder was about twice as likely as a 30-year-old to produce an exit
- Founders with 3+ years of relevant industry experience were twice as likely to build a top-0.1%-growth company
Takeaway: experience is one of the strongest founder advantages — starting too early may be riskier than starting late.
