Sony brings QSSR AI upscaling to the base PS5, debuting in Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei

Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling tier for the standard PS5, born out of its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. It debuts in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
Key points:
- QSSR acts as a drop-in alternative to the PS5 Pro's PSSR, but without dedicated ML silicon it performs closer to an upscaled 1440p rather than the Pro's upscaled 4K, per Digital Foundry's early hands-on.
- Sony graphics R&D engineer Daniel Craig explained that PS5 developers must tune both render and presentation targets, unlike the uniform 4K output strategy on PS5 Pro.
- Sony says QSSR can replace PSSR in existing titles with only a few days of tuning, lowering the barrier for more PS5 games to adopt AI upscaling.
