Open-source .char format packs face, clothes and body into one portable consistent character file
ashishsanu · reddit · 2026-10-02
A developer released .char, an open-source (GPLv3) portable character format with a community library at omnichar.org, letting consistent characters be reused across projects and models.
- Build from up to 9 references at a 2:2:1 face:clothes:body ratio; YuNet finds faces, SFace makes face signatures, DINOv2 makes a subject signature, all packed into one file
- Ships with Flux 2 Klein (image) and MiniMax H3 (video, now with int8) workflows
- Prompting: name the character ('sia walking on the beach'), avoid restating features in the generation prompt, put style details there instead; use well-cropped references to avoid drift
- Voice consistency is in progress: clone a voice sample into the .char so videos carry the same voice
- Requires 24GB+ VRAM and 64GB RAM locally
