Per The Guardian, Google said Wednesday it will withhold its most powerful model, Gemini 4 Argon, from the public for now, releasing it only to a vetted group of cybersecurity experts to prevent misuse by hackers. Chief AI architect Koray Kavukcuoglu wrote that frontier capabilities at this level require a phased release; Google is also giving the US government early access before wider availability.
Context:
- Anthropic similarly keeps Claude Mythos Preview restricted to a small set of trusted organizations
- Washington briefly forced Anthropic to suspend public access to Claude Mythos and Claude Fable in June, then set up a voluntary pre-release vetting process
- The announcement came a day after Trump hosted Pichai, Amodei and other tech execs at the White House to sign a voluntary accord on policing AI risks
- Google says Argon excels at software engineering, legal/financial work and cyber-defense; experts fear such tech could hack banks, hospitals and government systems
