South Australia has appointed three commissioners to lead what's billed as Australia's first Royal Commission on AI: former Federal Court judge and economist Dr Iain Ross AO as chair, joined by tech-policy specialist Kate Pounder and Stanford AI researcher Prof. Christopher Manning.
Premier Peter Malinauskas says the goal is capturing AI's benefits while reducing risks. The commission will consult businesses, unions, tech companies, industry groups and academics via public submissions, forums, surveys and roundtables.
The final report is due by 1 July 2027 and could shape future rules on jobs, education, economic opportunity, regulation and public services.
