NYC schools split AI policy for 2026-27: K-8 moratorium, vetted high school use plus literacy modules
lmoroney · x · 2026-10-01
Laurence Moroney details New York City Public Schools' AI policy for 2026-27: a moratorium on student-facing generative AI in grades 2K-8, and limited, vetted use in high school. Every high schooler takes two 45-minute AI literacy modules covering how AI works, privacy, bias, and appropriate use. Teachers can still use AI for planning, and assistive tech for IEPs/504s remains available. Moroney endorses the split: protect the years kids build reading, writing, and talk-time skills, while teaching older students how the tools work before they lean on them.
