Watermarks, Signatures and Metadata Will Complement Each Other for AI Provenance
davidstutz92 · x · 2026-10-01
David Stutz argues that AI content provenance technologies—watermarks, signatures, and metadata—will be used together and complement each other, much like SynthID watermarking and the C2PA metadata standard already coexist for images. He notes their tradeoffs: signatures can store richer information, but metadata is easily stripped accidentally by any webpage or tool that doesn't support the standard; databases require central coordination, while watermarks and signatures do not.
