OpenAI's DevDay agent launches put startups on notice, says founder in the crosshairs
NoSpecific64 · reddit · 2026-10-01
A founder building in the same category OpenAI just entered gives an honest post-DevDay assessment.
What OpenAI launched:
- Dots: an agent living inside ChatGPT with its own cloud compute, 4,000+ app connections, and even phone calls; currently Pro and Business Premium only.
- Agents API: powers Dots, with memory, computer use, and multi-agent features — things startups spent months building.
- Decisions API: picks one option from a predefined list, with well-designed permission controls (allow / require approval / block; background research is read-only).
Limitations: one dot per person, team version is an enterprise pilot, OpenAI models and cloud only, no self-hosting, mixed early feedback.
His take: products that are just "a model plus a loop on your inbox" and startups whose only moat was the harness are dead — including part of his own landing page. His bet: models provide intelligence, but businesses still need the workplace layer around it — who can use which agent, what it may send, per-task costs, where data lives. He concedes that once Dots hits cheaper plans backed by 1.2B weekly ChatGPT users, the startup window shrinks dramatically.
