DeepMind unveils SynthID Bio, first watermarking system for AI-designed proteins
GoogleDeepMind · x · 2026-10-01
Google DeepMind introduced SynthID Bio, a family of watermarking methods for synthetic biology that it calls a world first: an imperceptible signature embedded directly into protein sequences without compromising biological function.
- Acts like a digital ID card, helping DNA synthesis labs verify AI-generated proteins and keep sequence databases accurate
- Works by subtly guiding amino acid choices in sequences and adjusting atomic coordinates in predicted 3D structures, with lab tests confirming function is preserved
- Aimed at biosecurity: AI-designed proteins can bypass traditional DNA synthesis screening, and mislabeled synthetic structures risk polluting public databases
- Tools released on an open basis for research use
